What to ask (and tell) your photographer

Let me start off by saying this is not another shot list post.  Any pro who has been photographing weddings for years knows all the major groupings of images.  Basics?  Check.

What’s really going to set your wedding apart are the details you thoughtfully put in.  If your photographer is like me and loooooves to capture details, they’ll eat that up!

So, if we’re not needing to agonize over shot lists, what do you tell (and ask of) your photographer?  Glad ya asked.  😀

1. Details.  What details have you lovingly incorporated into your wedding?

Are you wearing your grandmother’s pearls or carrying a hand-stitched handkerchief?  Is your get-away car your father-in-law’s restored 1965 Mustang?    If it’s important to you, it’s important to me.  Tell us all about it.

2. Portraits.

Beyond the absolute must-have photos of you and your spouse at your wedding ceremony site, there are a plethora of options for more portraits.  This is where you get the drool-worthy images you’ll be bragging about for years to come.  Talk about the location options you’ve found and set aside time for portraits with your new spouse.  Allow time in your day for these portraits and you’ll be well rewarded.

3. Special people.  Friends and family are coming in from all over the globe!  Let us know who the special arrivals are in your wedding and we’ll make sure to get great portraits.  (and hopefully hear some juicy when-you-were-kids stories!)

4. How will the day flow with the images?   Once you’ve expressed all the major Who, What, Where, When and Hows, let’s plan time for the things that matter most.  This will ensure your day flows well and there’s no major delays or unexpected requests on your time.

I like to go over the day with the bride and their coordinator and plan out the time for detail images, time with family, first look and all the beautiful details of the day.  That way, you can relax on your wedding day, knowing we have everything in hand.  😀
